what mass of rhodium contains as many atoms as there are zirconium atoms in 43 grams of zirconium?
Q. Also how many Au atoms would be in 28 grams of sodium?
Asked by - Tue Dec 14 20:27:44 2010 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments
A. so convert them into moles so you have the same number of moles a mole is 6.02*10^23 atoms so it is standard measurement for amount of atoms mass of known /molar mass of known = moles of known moles of known = moles of unknown mass of unknown*molar mass= mass of unknown 43g of Zr *(1mol/91.224 g)=.4714 moles .4714mol of Rh *( 102.91g/mol)=48.51g of Rh 28g of Na *(1mol/22.990g)=1.21moles 1.21moles of Au * (196.97g/1mol)=288.38g of Au

Is it possible to get a ring rhodium-plated?
Q. I bought this cheap ring that I absolutely love and it's wearing out quickly. Is it possible that I get it rhodium-plated? and if so, where can I go and around how much would it be?
Asked by m&ms - Thu Feb 4 01:46:28 2010 - Fashion & Accessories - 2 Answers - Comments
A. take it to a jeweler. They usually plate gold items with rhodium, but are probably just as willing to plate your costume ring again. Around here, it's rather expensive, $25, but that depends on where you are. You might also want to shop around to get a few prices to compare.

If Rhodium is a non-malleable Precious Metal then how do people mix it with other Precious Metal?
Q. Do they use Electrolysis since only 2 ton Rhodium is produced each year worldwide. Lets don't forget that Aqua Regia does not react with it.

A. Good question! The M.Pt doesn't help either! However rhodium is able to be hot worked and Pt/Rh alloys can be formed this way. I expect you know of their use in high temperature thermocouples. You can see some details at if you scroll down. I must admit although I have a B.Sc in metallurgy, this is not an area normally covered in such courses and you need a specialist in that area for more details!

Do Swarovski rhodium plated brass items tarnish?
Q. I have been tempted to buy some of the cuplink chain by Swarovski. I know that it is rhodium plated brass. I am worried that if the rhodium wears off, the piece will start to look gold. I have read that rhodium is very sturdy and adheres well to brass. Anyone have any experience with any of these items? How long do they take to turn (if ever)? Thanks!

What kind of plating is white gold plating ? It is really gold, or it is rhodium ?
Q. I have been asked to research a white gold plating process. From What I know, white gold plating can only be produced as a flash ( very thin) coating. I am interested in a process able to produce a durable finish.
Asked by asintota - Fri Sep 8 18:30:48 2006 - Chemistry - 3 Answers - Comments
A. Rhodium is white in color, a precious metal, meaning non-oxidizing, It is well suited for plating of parts such as sliding electrical contacts that require protection from corrosion or galling. Rhodium is a bright, attractive finish that is non-tarnishing. When underplated with nickel it provides a mirror surface that is highly reflective. Rhodium plating - wear resistance Rhodium is the hardest of all of the precious metals. It provides the most wear resistant finish possible for the most demanding environments. My father used to use an electroplating process in his jewelry business. I believe he did this with white gold as well as colored gold.

Does reversing rhodium plating from a yellow gold ring caused damage to the ring?
Q. Hello I was wondering if you could inform whether by changing a yellow gold diamond ring into a rhodium plated ring and then reversing this back into the original yellow gold would have any compromising effects on the welfare of the ring itself? A jewellers rhodium plated my (Wedding Ring)yellow gold ring in error and they want to reverse it back instead of giving me compensation. A reply from would be highly appreciated. Many thanks in advance Leila
Asked by - Mon Apr 26 12:27:47 2010 - Fashion & Accessories - 1 Answers - Comments
A. From what I know, you cannot simply reverse the plating procedure. You can do that with other metal plating, but as far as I know, rhodium doesn't respond to that. What they can do is mechanically buffing it off. I am not sure how exact that would work around the stone settings (if they are claw set) and I would expect that a small amount of gold will come off as well. I don't think it would compromise the ring. It wouldn't be a lot different to having the ring professionally polished.

A. Take your ring to a jewelry store to have it cleaned and checked out. They have an ultrasound process that works wonders for cleaning rings. Also, keep in mind that a little wear on the pegs holding the diamond in place will allow it to fall out, loosing the diamond woud be a catastrophy.

Can you rhodium plate a sterling silver ring then gold plate it?
Q. I want to first rhodium plate a sterling silver ring of mine that cost 85$ (How much does rhodium plating cost roughly? for a size 6 ring?) Can you do that though? First rhodium plate the ring , then gold plate on top ? How long before both layers wear off? THANKS
Asked by - Sun Oct 23 06:05:06 2011 - Fashion & Accessories - 1 Answers - Comments
A. You can gold plate straight onto silver. Waste of money rhodium plating first. Talk to a jeweller about 'hard plating' it wears better. As far as how long it will last, it comes down to how much you wear it. Expect the plating to last less than 12 months with everyday wear. Gold plating shouldn't be more than about $20 Cheers Ross

Q. I'm looking to purchase some jewelry and the base metal is brass with rhodium plating. I read that brass can be like copper and turn the skin colors, so I'm wondering if the rhodium will make sure that my skin doesn't touch the brass and turn it green. Thanks.

A. The rhodium plating would be like a gold plating. Rhodium isn't going to react with your skin, and is fairly durable so it shouldn't rub off the brass base metal.

Does 9 and 18ct white gold look different if rhodium plated?
Q. Is there much difference between 9 and 18ct white gold if it is rhodium plated? Obviously there is more gold in the 18ct but if I plan to rhodium plate the rings regularly so the actual white gold is not really seen, is there any point in paying extra for the 18ct? I have seen a lovely bridal set in 9ct and it is mostly encrusted with tiny melee diamonds around the bands so not mcuch actual metal can be seen anyway.
