How to buy Gold at the Bank? Why ppl said buy Gold is the most stable form of investment?
Q. Is it in Gold bar,Gold Coins or a piece of paper like Certificate stated how many ounce and KG of Gold u have ? Since the price of Gold also flucture a lot?
Asked by Ringgit - Fri Mar 20 00:07:07 2009 - Malaysia - 5 Answers - Comments

A. Agree with SBH. I was once worked with Maybank for a while few years ago. They have this scheme called Gold Savings Account, where you purchase the gold and keep it with the bank. You won't receive actual gold as it is kept by the bank, but only an account book like normal savings account which states the weight of gold you own instead of RM. You can sell some of the gold back to the bank based on prevailing bank's purchase price (equivalent to withdrawal in normal savings account). You may try to ask Maybank if they still offer the gold savings account, I'm not sure. We are not familiar with it because gold savings are never popular among Malaysians.

What color goes with polished gold brass fixtures?
Q. Hello everyone, We are currently taking off alot of wallpaper in a new home we just purchased. We would like to replace the really large mirror and two polished gold light fixtures with two smaller mirrors and 2 more "up to date" light fixtures. All hardware in the house is the 1990's polished gold. I dont want to change out all hardware in the house, so what metal color goes with the gold brass? If possible I dont want to have to put gold fixtures up again. I read somewhere that your house fixtures should match with the same finish?
Asked by David H - Mon Aug 13 12:43:28 2007 - Decorating & Remodeling - 4 Answers - Comments

A. I think you could get away with using the oiled bronze for light fixtures, cabinet knobs, etc. You do not say what color wood cabinets/bath vanities you have--maybe a white washed framed mirror or wood framed mirror as an alternative to the metal. Your attention would be drawn to the darker oiled bronze and the brass hinges on the doors, etc. would not be noticeable. If you have those "Hollywood makeup mirror lights", get rid of them--they are so dated.

Why is gold the fundamental basis for the worlds monetary systems?
Q. Why has gold been considered so valuable since ancient times? I'm aware that the fiat monetary system has replaced the gold standard, I was just curious to the underlying reason gold is considered valuable. You can't eat it, you can't keep yourself warm with it, you can't really do much with it at all (it's a conductor, but that hasn't been needed until recently). Isn't there a tangible reason beyond it's beauty.
Asked by R B - Wed Oct 22 11:50:22 2008 - Economics - 5 Answers - Comments

A. Because gold has always been accepted as being universally worthy of value. Through history, it has held value as it is scarce and just about everyone wants to own some. It stood behind the currency which meant that people trusted the currency to have value because they could always technically demand gold payment from the government. This is one reason why the USA became so rich in the 19th century ... the gold strikes out west (especially the California 1849 strikes) and the strikes in Alaska at the turn of the 19th century. When a nation goes off the gold standard and says its currency is backed by faith in their government, that makes investors and others who would loan the government credit nervous. There is then not much backing the… [cont.]

Can I melt a yellow gold ring and line the inside of a white gold ring with it?
Q. I have already purchased a white gold band for my husband's wedding band. I have a small gold band that I'd like to melt down to line the inside of the white gold band. Anyone know if this can be done? Not planning on doing it myself. Should have worded this better. Is this something I could have done by a jeweler?
Asked by nightowl - Thu Sep 11 11:17:49 2008 - Fashion & Accessories - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Gold melts at 1,947F, well above any temperature you are likely to produce in your home. Contact a jeweler. I'm not a jeweler myself, so I'm not sure how hard it would be to do. You might have to make the white gold band bigger to accomodate the gold band inside and still fit it on your husband's finger. Any competent jeweler can advise you of the alternatives. Grandpa

A. Gold is found in rock, but over the millenia, water washes the gold into alluvial deposits in rivers and streams. The bulk of gold produced these days is mined in dry places. Gold is an element, so it is made of gold. It is occasionally found alloyed with mercury or silver. Grandpa

A. You can absolutely make 100g in a short amount of time. My last character had made 150g by the time she was lvl 20 (New server, no beggings, purely AH money). The best way to do this is to pick up one or more gathering professions and use them to fund your adventuring. Don't worry about crafting professions for now. Pick up: Mining or Herbalism Skinning Fishing Skill up as much as you can, and spend some time farming mobs. You might want to pick some mobs that will offer you Meat to sell on the Auction House, as well as ones you can Skin. Skinning is kind of time-consuming at first, but 20 Light Leather can go for well over 2g, as well as Copper Ore. If you go for mining, sell stacks of Ore, NOT BARS. If you smelt the Ore into Bars, you… [cont.]

What is the method in which gold plated jewelry is melted and the gold extracted called?
Q. My mom goes to this jeweler and he buys 'fake' gold jewlery from my mom. He buys pounds and pounds of it, and he then makes it into bars of gold. I have a fairly good understanding of Chemistry. My thought process is that he melts the jewlery and waits for the metals to separate because of their density and then collects the gold and forms it into bars. What is this process called? What is needed?
Asked by - Sat Oct 1 17:05:44 2011 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. It's called refining. It's done using aqua regia, in an extremely dangerous chemical process that is best left to professionals. Aqua regia is a mixture of strong acids that can kill and blind if not handled properly and with correct safety procedures. One can also use electrowinning and parting (similar to aqua regia).

What would gold be worth if it was only valued for its industrial uses?
Q. If Gold had no psychological value, if it was just another ductile, highly conductive metal, useful for all sorts of things but not as a form of money, what would it be worth? Ditto for Silver, Palladium, and Platinum. In other words, what would the precious metals be worth if people perceived them as ugly?
Asked by ConcernedLemming - Sun Dec 26 20:30:02 2010 - Economics - 4 Answers - Comments

A. There is no way of knowing the answer to this question since in their nature, the precious metals have value, (all value is "psychological", is subjective to the human mind) both for their industrial use as commodities and for their use as money. Indeed, the use of gold as jewelry is in the category of its "industrial" use, as a commodity. But it is its use as this commodity that originally gives rise to its universal acceptability, which in turn gives rise to its use as money. The distinguishing feature of money, as a commodity, or insofar as it arises from a commodity, is that the commodity is acquired not for the sake of its consumption, like other commodities like bread, but so as to give it away later on in an… [cont.]
