Substitute for a vegetable bullion cube?
Q. Yesterday I went to the store for the ingrediants for this chicken recipe: However I couldn't find vegetable bullion cubes, but I have some vegetable stock on me and was wondering if replacing the 1/2 cup water with 1/2 vegetable stock would work as a replacement for the bullion cube.

A. Yes. And being that you're using the vegetable stock, it may be a whole lot better. :o)

Can someone give me a little advice about how to keep my chicken or beef bullion cubes from becoming damp?
Q. and sticking to the paper they are wrapped in? I live in the south where it is very humid. My mom use to say put rice in the salt shaker to keep the salt flowing good. So I was wondering if that might work in my bullion cubes? Absorb the moisture?

A. I always keep mine in the freezer, and in the package (just so they'll last a long time). I don't use them often though, and then only the Knorr Veg. ones for bean soups, so don't want to have to worry about not having them when I want. If I need only half a cube, it's pretty easy to cut one in half after unwrapping even when it's "frozen" since they won't get as hard as ice/etc. Or you could just leave one or a few out (all the time, or for an hour or so after removing from the freezer). They'll probably last a long time in the frig too, but the freezer should be even longer. (Bouillon cubes do contain a *lot* of salt though, and salt is a natural preservative.) Diane B.

making ham soup with fat and no broth/bullion cubes?
Q. im making soup with ham "smoked-ready-to-cook" (crock pot) if i put only the ham in initially, i cut off rather large pieces of the fat (which i will be taking out before consuming) will i get enough flavor from that without putting in any broth or bullion cubes and only using water or should i still add a few cubes
Asked by - Thu Mar 25 05:03:16 2010 - Cooking & Recipes - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Forgive me for not being familiar with ham soup as you described, but why not try this? Make a split pea soup using 1/2 green,1/2 yellow peas, according to directions on the package, but use a non, or low sodium chicken broth instead of water. Add cut up carrots, celery, onions, and your ham(which already has plenty of salt in it). Add a touch of brown sugar, or my favorite, maple syrup, to the pot(always taste test), and if you haven't tried this before, will love it. If possible, add some of the split peas when half done so the soup will have a "slight" texture to it. Bon appetite !

Bullion Cubes for Vegs?
Q. I beacame a veggie on Friday after a horrific video I saw on goveg.com. I've been making lots of veggie soup, until I get some more recipies, but Im curious about bullion cubes. Can I still use them? Are the beef and chicken flavors from animals? If so, could you please recommend a simular taste. Thank you!

A. YES there are vegetarian bouillion cubes. The brand we have here is Mc Cormick, which is the regular store brand (not specifically vegetarian), and they have both vegetable and simulated chicken which is very good in soups and curries. I believe they have beef as well but I've never tried it. Here is a page that has a pic of the packaging - it might only be available in Canada, but I'm sure there's something similar in the States. This page also has other great veggie alternatives: Another page with great alternatives, and you can order a free vegetarian starter kit from them: Congratulations on the switch! A. I once super glued my supervisors coffee cup to his desk. It was one of those old steel gray linoleum topped desks. When he pulled his cup off the desk, it ripped out a large chunk of the desktop with it. He had the ultimate in spill proof cups.

Is it a bullion cubes or a billion pubes?
Q.

A. A bullion cube is used to make instant broth. A billion pubes is a large collection of genital hair. I guess you could mix them, and have 'soup a la pube', which you may be into if you have collected a billion pubes to begin with.

A. If you want to speak to a vet why don't you call one at a local animal hospital? The only people on here are animal lovers who have experience with dogs. If you aren't sure if its good for them- or even if it IS if it will upset their stomachs because it is new- then I would avoid it.

Asked by Leona J - Mon Mar 31 22:46:31 2008 - Cooking & Recipes - 3 Answers - Comments

A. You've basically got a soup right there, assuming you have seasonings such as garlic and herbs. Start by grating an onion, or chopping it really finely(since you can't have solids you don't want chunks) and lightly frying it in some heated olive oil or butter. Once it becomes transclucent, add some grated or minced garlic and let that cook for a minute or two. Then add your tomatoes, water it down some, and add herbs. Some good ones would be rosemary, thyme, marjoram, tarragon. Smell them; anything woodsy and deep goes well with tomatoes. I'd avoid adding too much basil or any oregano(none, no oregano) unless you want it to remind you of a pizza sauce. Then salt and pepper to taste. Let simmer for maybe 10 minutes, and voila! If you have… [cont.]

A. I've been in the same predicament many times! I have strained cans of soup, adding water to the concentrated ones. I have opened boxes of rices mixes ( like rice a roni) and diluted the seasoning pack, then strained that, since they are mostly bullion. I have even used the seasoning pack from boxes of stove top stuffing and hamburger helper.
