Bullion Cube Answers
My recipe calls for 3 bullion cubes. Can I use broth instead, or a healthier substitute?
Q. How much broth should I use... 3 cups? How much broth should I use, 3 cups? PS I'm making a lentil casserole
Asked by sjbchapman - Wed Jan 23 18:12:56 2008 - Cooking & Recipes - 6 Answers - Comments
A. It depends. If the recipe is also calling for 3 cups water (or maybe a combination of liquids like water and wine that equal at least 3 cups, then I would leave out the cubes and use broth instead of the 3 cups of water/liquid. If it isn't calling for that much liquid, I would use low-sodium / low salt buillion cubes - but I would substitute broth for the amount of water the recipe called for and reduce the cubes equally (ex. the recipe calles for 2 cups of water and 3 cubes. use 2 cups of broth and 1 cube).

A. How to Make Chicken Soup Using a Bouillon Cube.Homemade chicken soup is hearty and soothing, but in these busy times there's often no chance to start it from scratch. Fortunately, fast chicken soup is right at your fingertips if you've got a package of chicken bouillon cubes in the pantry and some handy leftovers in the refrigerator. Do bullion cubes go bad?
Q. I haves some chicken buillion cubes from 2002 I was wondering if these are still good? Do bullion cubes expire?
Asked by Monique S - Sat Jul 14 16:31:10 2007 - Cooking & Recipes - 6 Answers - Comments
A. They don't really go bad because they contain so much sodium and the sodium acts as a preservative. They can lose flavor over time, though. I would let your taste be your guide on this one. By the way, you can keep bullion cubes and granules (as well as herbs and spices) fresh a long, long time by storing them in the freezer.

How to make gravy using bullion cubes?
Q. I want some gravy for mashed potatoes but all I have to make it with is bullion cubes. Can you help me? Thanks!
Asked by shemustbeboard - Fri Feb 15 19:36:45 2008 - Cooking & Recipes - 4 Answers - Comments
A. First of all you need to melt the bullion cube in a cup of hot water. Put about 2 TBSP flour into a non-stick fry pan and brown it by heating the pan and continuously moving flour until it gets a little golden brown Add a little melted butter into pan and mix until paste like. Add melted bullion cube mixture to your flour paste and stir on low until smooth and liquid as gravy should be, BUT, do not use all the salty bullion ,melted, cube liquid, use some plain water in the pan to get a balanced flavour, but not too salty. You could add some onion powder or fried onions or fried mushrooms to your gravy also. Sprinkle of pepper is OK. Taste it.

What is a good alternative to vegetable bullion cubes?
Q. I am making vegetable soup, and the recipe calls for bullion cubes.I am tryiing to cut down on sodium, and these are loaded with it.What can I use instead that will be as tasty? Thanks.
Asked by Cheese - Sun Feb 1 13:06:11 2009 - Cooking & Recipes - 7 Answers - Comments
A. Best would be homemade vegetable stock! Do you have some vegetables you could boil (and the time to boil them)? Celery, carrots and onions would be a good start. Boil for several hours, adding water as needed, then strain out the vegetables. You can use it as the primary liquid for your soup, or you can boil it until the volume is reduced by half, then freeze it in an ice cube tray. One cube is roughly the equivalent of one of those little bullion cubes. If you don't have time to make it yourself, look at the store for a low-sodium vegetable broth. It will probably be in the same aisle with soups, right next to the chicken broth and beef broth.

When using a slow cooker, do ingredients need to be layered or mixed?
Q. I am a first time crock pot user, but the beef stroganoff recipe i have says to add water mushroom soup, garlic, and bullion cube. Should I mix these all together beforehand? If not, how are the ingredients evenly distributed? And do I just drop the bullion cube in? Help me!

A. For this recipe add them all in the pot and then mix up a bit. I would dissolve the bullion cube in a tiny bit of water. As a general rule, vegetables always go to the bottom. It helps them to cook better. Meats go to the top. Then your seasoning. Adding the liquid is last but you want to make sure that you do not add too much liquid to your crock pot. The cooking process brings out a lot of moisture. You don't want your food to swim too much. It won't take long to get used to how yours works. Good luck and good eating. Mel

What exactly are bullion cubes and where can you buy them?
Q. I'm wondering what bullion cubes are, what you use them for, and where you get them?
Asked by elisabeta - Fri May 5 12:50:56 2006 - Cooking & Recipes - 35 Answers - Comments
A. A bouillon cube (US) or stock cube (UK) is dehydrated broth (bouillon in French) or stock formed into a small cube (about 15 mm on a side). It is made by dehydrating vegetables, meat stock, a small portion of solid fat (such as hydrogenated oil), and seasonings (usually including large quantities of salt and monosodium glutamate) and shaping them into a small cube. Dehydrated broth is also available in granular form. Broth made from rehydrated cubes is inferior in taste to fresh broth because of its high salt content and flavors disrupted by the boiling process; however, it is convenient and cheap, and is widely used in British cooking to add flavor to a dish. They are available at any grocery store/supermarket.

A. All Knorr stock cubes are MSG free across the range. Another good one is Kallo, even these are widely available and in every British Supermarket. It's mainly OXO and own brands that you have to avoid.
