Does the condition of a bullion coin affect its value?
Q. I have a 1987 American Silver Eagle, it is in pretty bad condition, scratches all over, dirt around the edges, dents, you name it, it has it. So I was thinking of selling some of my silver, and on the list to sell is my Silver Eagle, I was wondering if the dents and dirt and scratches will affect what I get for it. Anything would help, thank you.

A. In theory, no, but in real life, yes. Bullion coins can have extra collector value. Bullion coins with no extra collector value should be worth market price, though when selling a single coin, or just a few, you'll be offered a steeper discount from market than if you were selling a large quantity. You might be offered 5% to 10% below spot silver by a dealer if you had ten or more Eagles, and 15% or more below for one coin or just a couple. Otherwise, it's not worth the dealer's time in trying to make a profit. But when an Eagle, the vast, vast majority of which are still in superb condition, is as beat up as you describe, and you have just one, I'd expect at least a 30% discount. Somewhere around $13.

Silver bullion or coins?
Q. For less then $300 hundred dollars would you suggests silver bars, rounds, or something like American Silver Eagles or Canadian Maples? Is it safe to buy these from a website or better to go to some kind of coin shop? If so, what are some trusted sites?

A. Doesn't matter if you get bars or rounds. Silver is silver (as long as the purity is the same). I prefer sounds like the Canadian Maple Leaf or the Austrian Vienna Philharmonics. Both are .999 silver but I like the coins better than the others. If you are just looking to spend 300, I would try to buy at a local store. You could buy online but if you aren't buying a large quantity the price is going to be higher and then you have to pay for shipping and handling. I have never bought from this sight but I know people that have. They said it was a good one.
