How to fit a lock to my aluminium frame double glazed door?
Q. The back door of my house (an aluminium framed double glaze) has got just a simple lock and I feel it is not secured enough. I want to fit an internal bolt lock. Is this within the realm of DIY, and how do I this? Thanks

A. it is quite easy. Get a Defender Security Spring Loaded Bolt Action Sliding Patio Door Lock, Aluminum Finish Model U 9866 You will need a drill to drill the hole for the bolt to go into and two holes for the screws. They also have one that has a keyed lock on it for extra security. I have one on my sliders and it took about 3 minutes to install.

A. Cleaning coins is fairly risky. Botched cleaning jobs can make a very valuable coin almost worthless on the market, and actually do more harm than good to a coin. Deciding whether or not to clean isn't easy. Cleaning goes in and out of fashion like any other trend; some years, cleaned coins are popular and other years, they're not. Overall, serious collectors prefer "natural" coins. You will often hear collectors talk about "toning". That's just a nice way of saying tarnish. Oddly enough, an evenly toned coin with an attractive color can be worth more than an artificially shiny, polished coin. Toning, however, is not the same as dirt or corrosion. Leaving these on a coin can cause even more damage to it over time.… [cont.]

How do you ground aluminium foil?
Q. I've put up some aluminium foil as a DIY blackout blind but I've heard it can act as an antenna if not grounded, which could possibly mess up TV reception. How can I ground it, do I have to use copper or something specific, or could I just cut open an Ethernet cable and use that? Really? Could somebody explain grounded and non grounded and antenna stuff because I don't really get it?

Q. Do they get used again, as to say that the soda/fizzy drinks can that your probably holding has been used by about 5 people before or do they get turned into another item that requires the use of aluminium?

How do i cut an anodized aluminium pipe without warping/damaging the end of the pipe?
Q. Do i use a pipe cutter? I need to cut a aluminium pipe (anodized) (it's a smoothbore barrel), so in the end, the end part where it was cut, has to be exactly the same diameter, like other parts of the pipe/barrel. can anyone help me? my friend's uncle is a metal machinist, is his help the best bet?
Asked by mgs4ftw - Sat May 30 22:00:48 2009 - - 5 Answers - Comments

A. Depending on the diameter of the pipe, you may be able to cut it on a miter saw. It will leave a rough, but square end. Use a file to dress the cut end. Hope this helps.

Asked by ellhowftw - Wed Dec 24 06:23:08 2008 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. As long as you don't intend to do some welding on the piece later, you may use a 7xxx series alloy. This is aluminum alloy armor though so if you would have a hard time looking for it you just have to settle with the more common 6061 - T6. These so far are among the hardest type of aluminum alloys.

What is a chemical test to distinquish between a peice of Aluminium and Platinum?
Q. Can someone please describe a simple chemical test i can perform to distinguish between a small peice of aluminium and a small peice of platinum? Would an acid test be appropriate? Any help much appreciated thanks!!
Asked by inky_bear - Fri Apr 11 18:45:47 2008 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Try to react the metal with zinc nitrate. Aluminum would displace zinc in that reaction, but platinum would not. Thus, if there is a chemical reaction, it is aluminum. If there is no chemical reaction, it is platinum.

How do I clean a aluminium bronze coin?
Q. I have a brand new collectible aluminium bronze coin. But a few days ago I noticed a couple of large green spots on it. I think maybe I spilled something on it, but I don't remember having anything besides water near it though. I tried to clean it with soap and water, and it got the green spots off, but there's still a layer of something on there. What's the best way to clean it?

A. Collector coins should never be cleaned. you can try extra virgin olive oil for it will do the least damage but it may take a long time. Any thing such as vinegar which is an acid will eat into the coin.

How can I make aluminium sliding windows slide easily?
Q. My flat has sliding aluminium windows which are about 10 years old. Although I've cleaned the runners thoroughly, the windows are hard to slide and stick when I open or close them. Is any product, commercial or otherwise, that will stop this?
Asked by zafir - Sun Dec 6 20:28:02 2009 - - 3 Answers - Comments

A. I did this. Take the window out and rub wax on the runners on the aluminum window bottoms. It sure helped in my case. You can also try to wax the tracks if you can get at them. Just use wax like Parafin wax.

How do you clean a discolored aluminium cooking pot?
Q. It is a "club aluminium" dutch oven from the 50's. It is discolored on the interior and has baked on dirt on the exterior. The exterior has a textured surface which makes cleaning more difficult. I tried baking soda and water paste, but it did not budge it!
Asked by James T - Sun Nov 19 08:43:54 2006 - - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Aluminum in that form for cooking really isn't safe anymore. Use it for a planter. The only really safe Aluminum cookware is Anodized (hardened on the outside). They have found that with he softer forms of Aluminum you are actually getting it in your food - they "think" this could be a link to Alzheimer's Disease.

How do I remove the aluminium frames that were used for secondary glazing on windows?
Q. I am trying to remove secondary glazing from the inner frame on our sash windows. I have already taken the glass out, but I can't find any obvious screws to undo, that allow the aluminium frames for the secondary window to be removed. Any help gratefully received! Thanks for the first answer, but the window itself is actually already out, it is the frame that remains I am trying to remove. I'm thinking that it us glued in to the wooden window surround.
Asked by Chris - Fri Mar 19 17:56:57 2010 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. If they're storm windows, a lot times they are spring loaded on an outside edge. You would apply pressure against the spring (push up or down) and then slide the window out.

How to fix a dent in an aluminium, powder coated white folding sliding door?
Q. We have just installed some white aluminium, powder coated folding sliding doors. Just one day after installation, my partner folded them back whilst leaving the key in the lock. The key has dented and scratched the aluminium surface. Does anyone know the best way of rectifying the dent and scratch? The area of damage is about the size of a 5 pence piece, however, because the rest of the surface is so pristine, it looks very bad. Many thanks.
