An alloy is a partial or complete solid solution of one or more elements in a metallic matrix. Complete solid solution alloys give single solid phase microstructure, while partial solutions give two or more phases that may be homogeneous in distribution depending on thermal (heat treatment) history. Alloys usually have different properties from those of the component elements. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Alloy" Writing a book and asking for possible future alloy compositions, any help? Q. I heard that if we had the technology to have a higher proton count in an atom you would get a lighter and stronger alloy, any truth to this? What are some methods that are currently being used by scientists around the world? What are some newer alloys that are being developed that are much stronger then commonly found materials? Writing a short story for a class and was hoping to make it some what of a probable scenerio for technology in the near future. Thanks for any help you can offer. Asked by A55H0L3 - Sun Dec 30 15:18:37 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. No. Any atoms with a higher proton count are radioactive, and have a very short shelflife. But, I heard about the so called "island of stability" which might prove to be stable. A very strong material, although not an alloy, is carbon nanotubes. Another very strong alloy would be diamond engrained stainless steel. Answered by Quantas - Sun Dec 30 15:30:13 2007 What is the difference between T3 and T6 Aluminum Alloy? Q. What is the difference between T3 and T6 Aluminum Alloy? Does one tend to be stronger than the other? Is one more resistant to abrasives? Many Thanks! Asked by Todd K - Mon Apr 30 14:08:56 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Those are not full alloy numbers, but indicators of how the alloy was tempered (heat treated, worked and/or aged) prior to being sold as stock. The alloy composition would be indicated by the numbers preceding the temper, such as the 2024 in 2024-T3, or the 6061 in 6061-T6. A -T3 product has been heat treated and cold worked, and is generally stronger than the -T6 product which is heat treated and artificially aged. 6061-T6 is popular because you can weld it with MIG, TIG or stick. 2024-T3 is stronger, but typically fastened mechanically (bolts, rivets, etc). Q. If you put this alloy out in regular conditions at room temperature, would it be stable or would a gigantic explosion happen?
