What is the best way to prepare and eat abalone?
Q. I will have freshly caught abalone- I know it can be very tough if not prepared properly. I would like and tips on shucking and I have heard various things like drown them in fresh water, leave them in the fridge overnight, soak them in milk etc. etc. - In your experience what is the best way to prepare and eat abalone?

A. I am sooo jealous! Abalone is the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. I have never prepped it from the shell but I have sliced and pounded it before. I don't know why you would soak it in milk. Its got such a great taste the way it is. I put mine in the freezer just long enough to make it easier to slice. Lay flat and use a large sharp knife. Pound with a non abrasive meat mallet, season lightly with salt and pepper, dip in egg and flour or just flour and cook in hot butter for about a minute (or less) on each side. Eat immediately.(You don't need anything but a fork-don't bother with lemon juice or tarter sauce.) On the other hand if you don't wanna mess with it, you could e-mail me and I'll take it off your hands! enjoy!

Does anyone know where I can order live abalone online in Texas?
Q. I want to order some live abalone and have them deliver it to my house. However, most places I checked is located in California (I live in Texas) so the shipping charges are really expensive. If anyone knows of places I can order from in Texas that would be great.

Q. i went scuba diving in Monterey not too long ago. I found empty abalone shells and took 3 with me (over time). i've seen abalone shells polished in some stores when i went diving in hawaii, and i was curious as to how i would polish a shell on my own. i hope to get at least one polished well so i can give it to someone near and dear to my heart. so far i've seen boil it, bleach it, and leave it outside in the shade for a while. i want to know the best/fastest way (preferably a combination of the two)

A. aww very cute. well do you know a cheap and inexpensize way?? it's actually very easy efficient and not costly at all!! this is what we did.. we got clear nail polish (from any store) sally hanson is the best because its not sticky when it dries. then, you pour it on a paper plate and get a paint brush, not the brush it comes with (too small, it will take to long) paint the whole shell. Where gloves if you want, you dont have to. Once it dries tak it outside and spray some hairspary along the whole inside, outside, underneath and there you go!! a beautfiful shiny polished shell hope this wokrs good luck =]]

can you describe the taste of the abalone sea food dish?
Q. I want to try abalone and would like a description of its taste and texture. i am familiar with the ususal sea food dishes like baked cod, grilled lobster tail, fried battered clam, crab cake etc.
Asked by neoga illinois - Fri Jul 11 21:53:09 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is delicious usually served not in a dish but with very minimal ingredients - or at least the way I like them. Texture a like clams or calamari taste is soft and buttery. Once you have it - and it's very hard to come by because of diving laws etc you will want more! I like it sauteed in butter with lemon and a little salt. Cleaning them is a pain, but worth it!

Q. How long will abalone frozen in the shell stay good in the freezer?
Asked by Michael F - Sun Mar 16 21:54:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well in order for it to be any good at all, it has to be frozen the same day it is purchased. If it was frozen within an appropriate time, it will keep, as in won't rot, for as long as any other meat. 6 mths maybe, if it is properly stored. But it won't be very good. It will tend to be tough.

How do you harvest an abalone?
Q. How hard is it to pry that sucker off a rock?
Asked by bukakitonight - Fri Oct 24 14:30:17 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. An abalone shell is not even on the bottom, so when they suck onto a flat rock, there is a crevice. You stick an abalone iron into the crevice and pull. If you don't get it out on the first try, it will suck onto the rock and it will never come off.

Is the abalone spoiled?
Q. I took fresh abalone out of the freezer to thaw in the bottom fridge. However, because I didn't end up cooking it, i left it in thawed in the fridge for about 4 days before putting it back into the freezer. It's been two weeks and i just took it out of the freezer and the outside rim of the abalone is green! I havent seen the abalone until now because it was packaged so maybe it was green to begin with. Is it possible for abalone to have a greenish tint on the sides?

A. Keep out of direct sun light. Out in nature those out in direct sun light start to brake down ( decompose ) But those that are in a shaded area seem to keep their luster and strength almost for ever. I do agree clean with only mild soap and water and no harsh chemicals. I have seen people place them in their flower gardens only to decompose from the suns ultraviolet light in short order ( in just a few years ) but set on coffee tables as ashtrays out of the sun for twenty years and look new and fresh with out any sign of discomposing.
